December is here and Christmas is right around the corner. You know what that means...another 25 Days of Christmas to create. So I'm starting out with posting my title page today. All of this is cut with my Cameo and then backed with a turquoise foil paper. The tree and the title "The Most Wonderful Time of the Year" are from the Silhouette store, but I created the "25 days" from my own handwriting.
I finished this layout last night. This was a fun day. We went to see Harry Potter. I'm a big Harry Potter fan and read all the books thanks to a good friend, Georgia. She got me hooked on the books many years ago. I don't think I would have started them on my own. But it always seems that way with book series that I start. I loved the Twighlight series too and, again, I didn't think it would interest me. That series I started by reading a blog post by someone around my age and she seemed to love them, so I gave the first one a try and I was hooked. The other series I love is J.D. Robb's IN DEATH books. I've read 20+ of those and love them. Wendy got me hooked on those and she also got me hooked on Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum. The last series I read, thanks to Susan, was The Hunger Games.
But I digress...let me get back to the topic of this post and that is to share my layout for today. The picture is of Tony at some model homes we went to after the movie. The washi tape border with numbers down the side is from the new Basic Grey Fact & Fiction collection and the glittered candy cane striped tape is from Recollections. I think I'm starting to get hooked on the washi tape fad (although I tried to resist it) that's sweeping the scrapbooking world. I've added two different ones to the top of the photo.
The damask pattern is a flocked transparency.
Then I added this really pretty gem from Jolee's Boutique, French General Collection.
I finished this one today and I'm really happy with it! I took the pictures with my iPhone, so they aren't the greatest, but they really caputured the memory for me...so I love them anyway...and, I also have some great videos of Michael singing (the sound quality is pretty good). That reminds me...I should upload them to YouTube and put a QR code on this layout! Okay that's on the TO DO list now.
EDIT - I uploaded 3 of my videos and generated the QR Codes. I will print them and glue them to the layout below. This one is my favourite. Michael talks about his engagement.
The concert was AWESOME. He is soooo entertaining and funny! Great concert!!
Here's the layout...it's on an iridescent glittered sticker sheet and depending on how the light hits it, it looks white or it can look pink. Here's a scan of the image and then a picture of it...looking very different. It's almost more somewhere in between IRL, but closer to this first one.
I came across some clearance foil Thickers yesterday that were all numbers. So I thought I would make my title page for my 2010 Christmas book with them. At first I was thinking I'd scatter the numbers around randomly and it just didn't feel right to me, so I tried lining them up and this is what I came up with:

I finished up another couple of pages for my 2010 December daily. This is a slice of life (reality) right smack in the middle of the Christmas Season. Quinn was not feeling well for about 5 days and wouldn't eat (he was 14 yrs. old at the time). I took him to the vet for tests, blood, etc. and "nothing was wrong". The vet didn't know what to do for him. But I decided to have him checked by his veterinary dentist just in case something was wrong with his teeth. He had his teeth x-rayed and cleaned and nothing seemed to be wrong with him...BUT after that he started eating again and feeling fine. So something must have been up. We were just so relieved to see him back to his old self.
So, that's the reality with these two pages. No presents and glitter and decorating and fun for these two days...just plain old LIFE.
DAY EIGHT- Off to the dentist for Quinn. After it was over he was really good and that brings new meaning to JOY & PEACE for my Holiday Season.
DAY NINE- The whole family enjoying quality time together. Tony and Spencer are in the background and the focus is on Quinn. So great to have him back out here with us. All he wanted to do the past week was hide in the corner behind a table and sleep. So wonderful to see that he's "feelin' fine".
If you've been following my 25 Days of Christmas "catch up" this year, I finished 2011 in July and got back to working on my 2010 book. I'm not working in any particular order, so these are days 13 & 14.
DAY 13 - LET IT SNOW SOMEWHERE ELSE
This day I addressed all of my Christmas cards. I always save a couple of cards for my album, so I used the whole card on this page...I cut out the snowman from the center and put my pictures in this blank area to frame them, then I put the snowman cut out part vertically. The chipboard letters for "Let it Snow" are stitched down with silver thread. The larger snowflakes were given to me by my Mom (a crafter as well) who cut the snowflakes from glitter foam with dies. The smaller snowflakes are buttons. The journaling reads: " Let it Snow - This might be the sentiment on our cards, but my real feeling is LET IT SNOW SOMEWHERE ELSE!" For those of you who don't know, I live in Southern California, so the chance of snow here is 0%. So I like to remember the beautiful, peaceful snowfalls of my childhood in Canada...but memories are always better than reality...the snow that resulted in slush and slippery roads and ice and cold. So I'd prefer to remember what I want and it can snow somewhere else!

DAY 14 - HE BRINGS ME JOY
The picture for today is Spencer sitting under the Christmas tree in a Fancy Feast box. He loves to just sit in boxes. So I put a bow on his head and took a picture of him...my little present. The layout is just a lot of playing with some beautiful papers by MME from their ALL IS BRIGHT COLLECTION. I added glitter and gems to the paper. Across the top I added a straw with pearl pins on the ends and hung banners. The smaller ones are stickers from the collection and washi tape. The large banner is cut from paper and I put washi tape across the top with ric rac ribbon and gems.
I can't believe Fall is right around the corner (although with the heat wave we're having it doesn't seem possible). So my best decorating months are coming up. I love to jazz up the place just a bit with fun Halloween stuff and, of course, Christmas decor. Which leads me to thinking about my 25 Days of Christmas book again. I finished the 2011 book in July and now I'm thinking about my 2010 again. I'd love to finish it so that I can be back on track for 2012. I've got Days 1-6 and Days 23-24 done so far. I worked on Day 24 today.
This was a picture I took with my iPhone when Mom and I were out shopping on Christmas Eve. I cut the title out with my Cameo and the clouds are dies from Papertrey Ink. The Santa and peppermint are chipboard embellishments from MAMBI and the sun and "out and about" are from K & Company.

I finished my Christmas book! I'm so happy to be done. To complete it, I did a two page spread for Christmas day and then one page at the very end.
To create the two pages I used paper and elements from one of my favourite companies...My Mind's Eye (MME). It's from their Lost and Found Christmas Collection 2011. I started with one of their 12x12 sheets of patterned paper and decided I wanted to cut it down to make a two page spread. The problem is that my pages are 8.5x8.5 so I would cut into each section if I just used the one sheet. Fortunately I had two sheets of this paper so I was able to do what I wanted.
Then I also used some of their chipboard embellishments on the pages:

Cruising right along... I've got all the way to the 24th DONE! Christmas Eve was the most labour intensive because of the 600 or so pictures I had. It makes it hard to decide which ones make it and which ones end up on the cutting room floor!
In the end, I think these pictures capture the day and I'm happy with the result. I have a 2-page spread with 4-1/4" fold out sections (flaps) on each side...essentially extending each page to 12.75" x 8.5".

I've made some progress since my last post...6 more pages done for my December Daily! I've created this video to give you a close up look at the pages (rather than taking detail shots) and also to explain some of the elements on the pages. When I take the viedo I am holding my camera and it can be slightly shakey, so I use the new feature on Youtube to stabilize the video, but what I notice after is that it does cut off a bit along the top and bottom of the video, so what did show in the original is a bit off camera in this one (don't shoot the videographer for that!). ☺
DAY 16 - "SWEET SIXTEEN" - Received a gift package of chocolates and pears from Tony's sister and family. To create the page I stamped a gift tag on some patterned paper (which had the snowflakes already in the bottom left) and coloured part of if with a red Copic marker. Also added a red glittered epoxy heart and "tied" it to the package with a piece of red/white twine. Added some 3-d embellishments with the Christmas chipboard sticker and the pears.
Our "family tradition" is to play games during the Christmas season. Tonight it was Scrabble with a very interested Spencer joining in the fun. We gathered next to our televised fireplace (we so miss a real fireplace...that is on the wish list for sure!). Added some 3-d embellishments with the title and the banner along the bottom. Then I stapled on some tickets along the side that I cut out from patterened paper.
I like to include my Christmas cards as well as the wrapping paper I use each year into my book. So this is an actual piece of the wrapping paper glued to a piece of cardstock and embellished with a few snowflakes and stars. The number "18" are metal numbers from Tim Holtz.
Most of you know I love Amarayllis in the Winter and I never miss growing at least one each year (ususally more than that). This year my Amaryllis was in perfect bloom and this is a picture I took at night. I printed the image a couple more times and cut out the flower and attached it with pop dots to create a 3-d effect.
This page is created with Basic Grey "Eskimo Kisses" paper and chipboard embellishments along with Heidi Swapp's number chipboard.
I used my Cameo for the elements on this page. First I created the peace sign with a font called Symbolix and offset the image in the Cameo software. I cut 3 pieces, the base which is slightly larger, the white piece which fits on top and then I left the two pieces together when cutting it so that it would just cut the outline. I then glue the outline to the larger bottom piece and applied "Platinum" Stickles to the outline. The reason I used that extra piece of the outline cut out is that the Stickles flow on and settle perfectly onto the outlined piece. I could never get it that straight if I tried to outline the large piece myself. Then the title "Peace on Earth" is a file from Silhouette which I also outlined with "Christmas Red" Stickles. The 21 is cut from the Cameo, the tab is die cut with a Papertrey die and stamped with an Ali Edwards stamp. I explain most of this in the video above along with where I got the heart globe.
I finished another couple of pages for my December Daily. Apparently I was at South Coast Plaza on both days (thank goodness I have pictures or I wouldn't remember a thing!). On the 14th I went there to meet Tony at Maggiano's for dinner and the next day I went to the smaller mall across the street after a hair appt. Can you believe I hadn't been to my hairdresser in about 7 months!? That's why my hair was getting so long. And, again, I just went to him a couple of weeks ago...so that was almost 6 months.
Anyway, back to Christmas. Here's a video about the pages...
I finished Day 12 for my 25 Days of Christmas book. Apparently not much happened that day because I only had pictures of the cats misbehaving a bit...which is what this page turned into.
Then for Day 13...I actually made this page several weeks ago. One of my favourite, happy programs to watch is GLEE. For their Christmas special they had a retro 1950s segment and I really liked it. So I took some pictures of it and that's my Day 13.
For those of you who own a Cameo, you might want to try this...
I created the files for Day 13 in Photoshop (you could use PS Elements too) and then I saved the file as a JPG file to open in the Cameo. But I also created an image that was filled in so that I could trace around the outer edge with the Cameo software. Just use your magic wand tool in Photoshop and select the white background around your image, then from the file menu at the top choose SELECT, INVERSE and it will select the image. Then just fill it with a dark colour.
So, here's the outlined file and I used auto trace in the Cameo software to create the cutting line. By having that solid image, it made creating the cutting line really simple. If I used auto trace on the detailed file I was printing, the auto trace had a hard time just getting the outer edges...it wanted to cut in to the picture in places. So this was my solution! Hope it makes sense to those who know about print and cut.
Once I had the cutting line, I deleted that filled in burgundy file above and I was left with just the outer cut. I then took my file I wanted to print (below) and carefully adjusted placement within the cutting lines. So then I had a PRINT and CUT file. Which was great because I had the Cameo doing all the detailed cutting around those letter and I didn't have to go through the trouble!

Here it is with the print file lined up over the cut file...you can sort of see the green outline where it will cut. Then, of course, under the option LINE STYLE, be sure to uncheck the box "print lines of selected shapes" otherwise that green line would print when I sent the file to print before cutting.
Another day finished to add to my book! At this rate I might finish before the end of June.
I made this one a two page spread because I wanted to add the pictures of the kids too. Susan had emailed me pictures from their day on the 11th. She didn't get them emailed until February though, so I'm glad I was able to add them to the book. It really does work out well putting this together after the fact...I knew there was a reason!

We spent a leisurely Sunday at home. Spencer and I scrapbooked while Tony and Quinn did a little work on the sofa. Meanwhile, the Yangs were busy, as usual, with Caleb starring as a shepherd in his Sunday school play. Later that evening they were out and about having some family fun and had a picture taken with Santa.
One of my favourite places is Roger's Gardens, especially at Christmas (and, of course, Halloween). They have spectacular displays and beautiful outdoor gardens. For today's layout, I am highlighting some pictures I took on December 9th when I went there to meet up with my dear friend, Kathy.
When it comes to metallics, I tend to like silver more than gold, but I have to say I am just loving this American Crafts glitter paper in gold! It's such a rich looking gold and I love how it compliments my pictures.
I loved this picture of the snowy tree looking into the Floral Studio, so I had to make it a full page...

I am a true hybrid scrapper. I don't think I ever scrapbook without my computer & Photoshop. I lay out my design, resize my pictures and print. However, I don't like all digital layouts as much as those with something "real" to embellish them. So that's when I like to add the extras or what I call the "physical" embellishments.
For those of you interested in how I put this together...I start by laying out my pictures and design in Photoshop and this is how it looks before I print and embellish.
I printed the photos on matte photo paper and trimmed. Then I glued them down onto the specialty glitter paper and added some pre-made embellishments to come up with the finished 2-page spread. It makes it just a little bit more special than a completely digital, flat layout. And, you'll notice the punched holes in my layouts, that's because I put them directly into an album without page protectors. I put them in order in the book and glue the pages back-to-back. For these mini-albums (this one is 8.5"x8.5") I like to be able to touch the layouts and not have them under plastic.
Now, with my 12x12 layouts, I put them into albums with protective sleeves. It wouldn't work to punch holes directly into them (or glue them back-to-back) because there's no particular order to them when I make them and I sometimes move them to different albums as I go along. So the sleeves work for that purpose. But I do miss the tactile element when the plastic covers them, so that's why I like doing it this way for my mini-albums.
Finished another couple of pages. I worked for 2 days on my Christmas cards this year so that's what these are about. (Sorry for the blurry parts where I smudged out our return address).
Day 7
DAY 8 - Finished up the cards and got them in the mail today.
I finished another layout tonight. This is a new little snowman I picked up at TJ Maxx on Dec. 1st. I spotted him on an end shelf and took a picture with my iPhone because I thought he was so cute...and, of course, the black and white drew me in.
Then I walked away because the last thing I really needed was another Christmas decoration to store. But he called me back and said "take me home, and look at my price, I'm a great bargain"...at $7.99 how could I resist? So I put him in my basket and for the next 1/2 hour or so that I was shopping I debated back and forth whether I really needed him. In the end, he convinced me to take him home. And, I'm glad I did because he's awfully cute and he stands on my work table facing the stairs so that he greets me with his charcoal smile every time I walk up into my loft. Also, he's holding the lollipop I made and I think it looks cute.
This picture in the layout I took on Dec. 6 and decided that would be my picture to highlight for the day. I did most of the work digitally. Here is the digital file before some additional physical (real) embellishments were added.
After printing the above on photo paper, I added glitter and a few other embellishments...

On the 5th of December I decided to highlight one of my favourite Christmas decor items...my large Nutcraker. I've had him for several years (I think at least 6 or 7) and I love to pull him out each year...just makes me happy to look at him.
I created the Nutcracker embellishment by using a Silhouette cutting file and piecing the different cuts of paper together. "Hello Friend" is also cut from cardstock and glued on top of the picture.
The left flap opens up to show journaling and a full length picture of my Nutcracker.
On the 4th of December Tony and stayed home again...the last thing we like to do is go out and fight the Christmas crowds...and, believe me, with the number of people here in California...THERE ARE CROWDS!
One of the things I did today was make a card for Mom's birthday. It's so much easier to just buy a card, but since she also likes to craft and make cards, I really felt I needed to make her one this year and I knew she'd appreciate the effort. So I made this cake card with a pearl trim and glittered icing. This picture is of me putting the glitter on the card.
The postmark heart is cut with a Silhouette file and pieced together, then raised with a pop dot and the center is glittered.
I'm back tracking to Day 1 now because I started my book with Day 2 & 3. So for today I highlighted the Christmas decorating...especially putting up the tree. I have to admit, I haven't pulled out all the decorations...too much of a hassle this year. Christmas has just come so quickly this year, for some reason, and I feel like it's going to be over before I know it. Anyway, I did get the tree up and some other decorations out. Well, here we go again...time for the December Daily aka 25 Days of Christmas! I've being doing this since we moved back to California in 2008. I finished 2008 and 2009 but I haven't finished 2010...but that doesn't mean I gave up on it. It's just that 2010 was a busy Christmas Season. Mom was here during that time and we were too busy CREATING the memories, which left no time to document the memories. But that's all the more reason to get them into a book because there are lots of good ones to record. However, I'm not sure where this past year has gone and it's already time for 2011.
I started my 2010 last month and I got to about Day 6. I plan to continue on simultaneously with the days in 2011. I'll see how it goes, but however long it takes both WILL get done!
I'm jumping right into 2011 with this post. This project is pretty popular in the scrapbooking community and Ali Edwards has a big following on her site all about it in her PROJECTS SECTION and during December she posts every day what she created for the previous day. Her secret in getting the pages done is to create the book ahead of time and then beginning December 1st she adds the pictures, journaling and some more embellishments. A great way to keep up with this project during a busy time of year.
HOWEVER, it's just not the way I want to do this project. I enjoy letting the pictures dictate my design, so I don't create my book ahead of time. I guess that's why it's super hard for me to keep up day to day...but I figure there are no rules in scrapbooking, so I don't feel I NEED to finish each day as it happens. Hey, look, 2010 isn't done yet, but I know I will finish it. I love looking back at the past couple of years and that satisfaction is what keeps me doing these projects...however long it may take me!
Plus, I have to admit, I don't always do my pages in order. Sometimes I jump around on different days depending on what inspires me. So for my 2011 book I started with Day 2 because I had such a nice day visiting Blanche that I wanted to document that first. So, here you go...Day 2...Friday, December 2nd...
I used my Wishblade to piece together this shopping paper doll using the Silhouette cutting file "Shopping Chica" by Sarah Bailey (shopping_chica_3_C01006_20508). Fun to do...but TEDIOUS because the pieces are so very small and then the time it takes for choosing the different papers, etc. I even found a logo for the Shops at Mission Viejo online and resized and coloured it to fit my theme. Then I added it to one of the shopping bags. So, lots of time and details,but I think in the end it was worth it. :-)
Now the banner...I saw some cute hand drawn banners by Lauren Reid on 2 Peas but I wanted to add my own words, so I needed to create them myself. I just drew them on white paper with a Sharpie and scanned them into my computer. Then I added the colour in between the letters in Photoshop. I printed them out on Matte Photo Paper and added them to my layout. I double printed the top banner and raised it with foam stickers. I also added black and white baker's twine in bows.
And that finished the 1st of 25 layouts for 2011!
Now...here's Day 2 for last year. All about the Grinch. That's Mom in the window at Michaels with the Grinch.
Here's the Grinch embellishment that I created by scanning an old window cling that I had of him and resizing it in Photoshop. Then I printed it on Matte Photo paper and used some white flocking to add texture and dimension to his collar, cuffs and hat. Isn't he cute?
And, perfect for today's theme, I also had pictures of the Dr. Suess characters we got for the kids for Christmas. It wasn't planned to have these pictures all together for today (unless I subconsciously did it!) but it worked out perfect for the page theme.
I added some 3-d K & Co. present stickers underneath the Grinch Christmas Tree. The tree was also a window cling that I scanned and printed. I also added some little silver embellishments to the tree.
Yes, you read that right...2010. I'm just getting started. I've done my albums for 2008 and 2009 and I want to do one again this year...BUT...I never did get to my one for 2011. Mom was visiting for the month and we were busy every day. I have so many good pictures and memories and I just have to get them into a 25 Days of Christmas book. So I've decided to start it now and just maybe I can finish it before December 1st when I'd like to begin the album for 2011. If I can't, then I can work on both of them together because all of the Christmas supplies will be at the ready!
Yesterday I worked on my first pages. December 1st we spent the day at the Long Beach Aquarium. What a great day...tons of pictures...but I just picked a few to document the day. After the Aquarium, we went to California Pizza Kitchen and Kohl's to buy gifts for the kids. I couldn't fit all of that into the two page spread, so I think I will add two more pages.
Here's what I have so far...
I'm finally taking time to work on my Christmas journal even though Christmas is over now. The idea is to work on the journal daily for the 25 days leading up to Christmas...oh well! But I must say that I did take my pictures every day and now I'll focus on putting it all together.
Anyway, I left off with doing Day 2 and I decided to create a coordinating page to go with it because while I was working in my room that day, Spencer was sleeping at my feet. So I wanted to document it. This is what I came up with...

I have created something for Day 3, but I'm not sure how I want to finish it up yet, so here's Day 4. It's very unlikely that I will work on this in date order because I know I work best with what inspires me...and that's not an orderly process! This page is all digital. I'm not sure if I'll add any physical embellishments to it or not. But I like how it came out digitally.
I've been taking my pictures every day for my 25 Days of December book (well, in fact, I've taken at least one picture every single day this year for my 365 day project) but I haven't had the chance to get a page done for each day yet. I've sort of been jumping around on my days between what inspires me at the moment and I also have to get some pictures printed in order to complete them. So I will share with you what I have for the 10th of December. I will get the picture with the boys printed and then it will be embellished some more when I put it in the book.
My Amaryllis plant started to bloom, so I was on the floor taking pictures of it. Before I knew it, both boys came over to see what I was doing and that's when I captured this picture of them. You wouldn't know it from the picture, but moments before Quinn nipped at Spencer's tail to bug him and it made Spencer turn around to give him the evil eye!...and, if I know Spencer, he also smacked Quinn in the head and that explains the look on Quinn's face.
I can't believe I stayed in again all day today. This week I've just been enjoying staying at home and being creative. The good thing about that is I guess it lowers my risk of catching the flu! But tomorrow I think I'll get out to the mall.
So today I finished the back side of the advent tree I did yesterday with the lead in "25 Days...Let the Magic Begin". Then I also finished my Dec. 1 layout. I guess that make me 2 days behind already though.
For the DAY ONE layout, I created the layout digitally, printed it and affixed it to some pearlized paper. I then added foam letters "day one" and a punched lace trim along the bottom.
I'm so excited to start my 25 Days of Christmas book for 2009 (you can take a peek at my 2008 book HERE). Although, it's a little overwhelming deciding just how to begin putting it all together. I started with my pictures yesterday and so far I have taken 253 pictures in 2 days (I'll only use one or two per day, but I always take lots of pictures every day anyway).
Today I spent almost the entire day working on just one page that's going to be my introductory/title page. It took so long because I had to put a lot of thought into what I wanted to do and how I would achieve it. The idea came from an episode I saw on Martha Stewart where she made a glittered advent calendar in the shape of a tree. This is quite large and I wanted to scale it down to fit 8x8. I thought I might try glittering it too, but that just didn't work out because it was too small and the numbers would be too hard to see.
So I designed a layout in my cutting machine software and then I cut the tree and numbers out of a very silvery, mirror-like cardstock. I raised it up with foam tape and attached it to an acrylic heavy sheet, then attached a decorative paper behind that. Then I painstakingly applied each cut out number inside the circle. That took more time than you can imagine. It was 3:30 pm before I looked at the clock and realized I hadn't eaten lunch!
I took a break for dinner and a couple of hours of TV and came back up to my loft to finish it. All in all I am very happy with the results, but it's one of a kind because I don't think I'd commit that time again to doing it.
It's hard to get a picture of this mirror paper without showing reflections and every speck, scratch or smudge on it, but it does look much better IRL.
So that was my day. A good day. A peaceful day. Spencer sleeping at my feet.
I finished my 25 Days of Christmas 8x8 mini-album!! Feels really good to actually complete it. As it got further from Christmas and with feeling sick in Jan. & Feb. it was hard to get back to it to finish. And, it was a lot of work to try to think up new things for each day, but I feel really good that I did because it's a nice keepsake.
